This is my Prelim exercise during this exercise we had to use DTP and an image manipulation program, to produce the front page of a school magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in a medium close-up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead.
The reason i choose to put this picture together in this way is because the main story of my magazine is the New mac suite that has recently been installed in the kings school. as you can see i have used the rule of thirds by having the person on the right the mac on the left and a small gap in the middle. I have the person in the image looking at the camera so that he engages with the audience. The other reason i have chosen this picture is because the colour of the person in the pictures jacket allowed me to contrast with the title and other pages throughout the magazine. The reasons i have chosen the text fonts and colours that i have used are because the colour contrasts well with the jacket that the person in the picture is wearing, and the reason i have used the different fonts are so that it shows that they are separate with out having to change the colour scheme of the rest of the magazine.

Here is my presentation on the UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON poster.

UNITED
COLORS OF BENETTON

1. How old are they? You can’t tell
how old they are.
2.
What gender are they? They are both
male.
3.
What racial group do they come
from? One of the men is white and one is black this is showing the colour’s
possibly the Colors in the brand name.
4.
What do the clothing codes tell
you? The clothing codes tell you that they are similar or possibly equal. They
are both wearing a blue shirt and denim jackets and trousers.
5.
What are their facial expressions?
You can’t see their faces.
6.
What is there posture? You cannot
see their posture but the positioning of the arms makes it look like they are
looking away from each other. This could be showing how they are different
through colour but the same in dress and as a person. This could also show how
they are different but at the same time where the same cloths and the same
aftershave which the advert is for making the company look good promoting
equality between blacks and whites.
7.
How would you describe the
relationship between the people? That they are maybe not friends or equal. But
the advert is trying to show they are it is just their colour that is
different.
8.
Is the illustration in colour or
black and white and why? The advert is in colour to show the colours of the
people. To put across the point of the advert.
9.
Are all the elements of the image
in focus if not, why? All of the elements of the photo are in focus this could
show how the brand is focused of showing the equality of black and white
people.
10. As
anything been left out of the illustration? Yes the rest of their body’s this
is just to focus you on the message this part of the picture puts across.
11. How
has it been lit and what are the camera angles? The image has been taken from
directly in front of the people with the flash on this could be to show how
when his skin is dark the flash makes it look lighter affecting the colour
possibly trying to make him look more like the white character in the image.
This is reversed for the white character but with the shadows.
12. How
does the slogan relate to the image? The only writing on the poster is the
brand name this could be showing how in there picture they are bringing out
parts of their brand name like UNITED and COLORS.
13. Where
is the advert set? The advert doesn’t look like it is set anywhere other than a
white room.
14. What
objects are included in the picture? The objects included in the advert are a
pair of hand cuffs to show the unity between the people.
15. Does
the product appear in the picture? You cannot tell really what they are
advertising other than the company.
16. Who
are you supposed to identify with in this image? You are supposed to identify
with the 2 male characters.
17. What
is being promised by this advert? That the company UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON
are supporting both blacks and whites and how they are equal.
18. Who
is the advertisement aimed at? It is aimed at all males showing how with UNITED
COLORS OF BENETTON they can all be the same.
19. Is
there any prior knowledge needed to understand the advert? If you did not know
what the company sold then you may be left wondering what the advert means
other than UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON supporting both black and white males.
